Pink Out Morning Rally: October

By: Chloe Wilson and Emmajean Wilson

Who has a rally at 6:00 in the morning on a Friday to be on live television? We do! On October 7th, a rally was held in the West Gym to show off our Eagle Pride to the audiences of Fresno. While the marching band helped wake up the students, our cheerleaders also really livened up the crowd. With our energetic waving around of pink pom poms, our school was surely unforgettable. All students who came were treated to a scrumptious breakfast and a cameo on TV, giving them a shot to be “famous.”

Homecoming: October

By: Emma Boone

Homecoming was on October 14th, 2016 at the Veterans’ Memorial Stadium. The Eagles stacked up a solid win Friday night against the Buchanan Bears with a final score of 23 to 14. Armed with Bambams and pumped with school spirit, there was no stopping the crowd from cheering on Clovis West to victory! Of course, we can’t forget the club booths! The smell of tacos, the bright signs along the ramp, and people bustling around really brought in the spirit of the homecoming game. The cheerleaders kept the fans on their feet, with the help of the band blasting some wild tunes.

The homecoming court was dressed to absolute perfection, from princess dresses, to football uniforms, to tuxedos, to shiny and sequined dresses, and to band uniforms. The Clovis West Homecoming King and Queen, Diego Cruz and Grace Meyer, were crowned with much support from the crowd, as well as the other homecoming candidates.
The homecoming skits ended with some shocking results:
1st place: Freshmen (Lifeguards)
The freshman skit was complete with cool surfer dudes, lifeguards saving lives, and even a few sharks who popped out of nowhere to attack! The amount of energy, variety, and flawless dancing truly earned the freshmen their win this year!

2nd place: Seniors (Firefighters)
The senior skit started out with a news story that led the audience to the scene of the crime where we saw the criminals burning up the scene, the mighty firefighters saving the poor damsels in distress, and even more firefighters teaming up with some “fire” dance moves.

3rd place: Sophomores (Zoo Keepers)
The sophomore skit consisted of many students dressed in animal onesies, and the remaining students as zookeepers, who caged the wild animals. However, the animals could not be kept long as they danced and ran amok!

4th place: Juniors (Doctors)
The junior skit incorporated No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, a cute story many remember from their childhood, into their skit. The doctors were there to save the day when the foolish monkeys fell off the bed and bumped their heads!

Overall, this homecoming game was definitely one to remember.

Fall Fashion (The Comebacks): October

By: Emma Boone
Fall is under way, and as the leaves are changing, so is the style around school. Here are highlights of the most common fashion trends seen around campus throughout this first part of the school year:
Bomber Jackets
Also known as a “flight jacket,” this popular clothing item has made a comeback from its popular use by military pilots in both World Wars. Watch out leather jacket, you’ve got some competition!
Choker Necklaces
Chokers have been around for quite a long time and have seemed to have hit another peak in its trend. Chokers have been worn by various types of women of different classes all throughout the ages, and there are many different styles of this simple tight-fitting necklace. Chokers can be made with practically any fabric, and can be plain, patterned, or have a pendant hanging from them.
Double Buns
Also known as Space Buns, or what I like to call them Honey Buns, this hairstyle has been popularized by anime characters, and has been seen around campus in a variety of styles. Some wear their hair with both buns fully up, while others do a half-up, half-down style with some hair in double buns and the rest down.
Mustard Yellow, Army Green, Blush Pink
These colors have been met with much popularity, as you can tell in popular stores such as Forever 21. Even though they may not be the most attractive colors, the somewhat “dull” shades seem to be quite the hit!
Friends Fashion
These next categories represent a comeback from the ‘90s, and are what I like to call “Friends” fashion, as many of these trends and those similar have been commonly seen on the widely popular TV show of the same name.

And, not to mention, my favorite trend of them all: Smiles! :)

Trending in California: Disneyland Updates: October

By: Emmajean Wilson

The world’s happiest place on Earth just became spooky. Disneyland, like every year, had completely decked out the parks from head-to-toe in pumpkins and ghoulish appliances. A key example is the Haunted Mansion, which was Nightmare Before Christmas-themed. Safe to say, Jack Skellington was the life of the ride, or death so to speak. Once Halloween passed, the Christmas Tree went right up! Now ready for the holidays, the Sleeping Beauty Castle is covered in “snow” and the scent of vanilla is spilling through Main Street USA. The Happiest Place on Earth just got merrier.

Sadie Hawkins: September

By: Giselle De Santiago
The Sadie Hawkins dance is one event of constant excitement. It turns the tables when it comes to inviting someone to a dance—here, only the girls get to invite the boys. Although asking someone out is nerve-wracking, especially with the constant possibility of rejection, it seems like the ladies have it down this year at Clovis West. While interviewing a few of our fellow female Eagles, it became quite clear that a lot of them are just full of self-confidence. For example, Sophomore Amy Durbano stated, “I already knew that he was going to say ‘yes,’ so I wasn’t really scared. I already had the courage to do it.” Personally, the thought then came up that maybe it was easy because she already had some type of relationship with him beforehand. As it turns out, though, this wasn’t true for everyone. Freshman Diana Gonzales demonstrated a similar level of confidence when she responded with, “It doesn’t matter to me whether he says ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ I’m not afraid to ask. I just let my emotions flow and do it.”

But, the table-turning doesn’t just stop at the ladies. Freshman Jakob Cervantes commented that being asked out was “a little flattering and [he] was kind of surprised.” So it’s not just the girls that get these emotions. Ladies, remember: when it comes to asking out a guy, have confidence and be courageous. Also, remember that the dance isn’t until Saturday, October 15th so you all have plenty of time to look for your guy and build up the courage to ask him out.

Golden Eagle Athletics: September

By: Emmajean Wilson
The Eagle athletes are kicking off the year to a great start! The West gymnasts did phenomenal at their first meet with JV and Varsity placing very high, including Marita Snyder getting first place for all-around gymnast. JV Girls’ Golf is currently undefeated, and Varsity is doing great, as well. Girls’ Volleyball has killed it this preseason, too, by passing, setting, and spiking their way to many victories! Girls’ Tennis is starting their season off wonderfully, and are currently serving up some serious wins for our school. Water Polo is having a big blast (or, should I say, “splash”) so far this year! Cross Country is doing a fantastic job getting across the finish line, and the Girl’s Varsity Team earned third place at a recent race! Frosh Football is doing a great job as a team this year and they continue to learn and grow more everyday. JV Football is also doing awesome, too, and are extremely lucky to receive help from such experienced coaches. Finally, the Varsity Football Team never fails to pump us up, especially with their recent win! Let’s go Golden Eagles!

Clovis West Marching Band Fundraiser: September

By: Gwyneth Quitorio

Clovis West Marching Band’s annual Pasta Palooza fundraiser on Friday, September 16th was a huge success!  Thanks to everyone’s support, the program was able to sell out the event and raise tons of money.  Funds will go towards upcoming trips and competitions—including Grand Nationals in the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, instruments, uniforms, staff members, and more.  Look out for the next annual fundraiser this spring: Pancakes and Performances! Enjoy freshly made pancakes, as well as solo and group performances from the Clovis West Instrumental Music Program. See you there!

EECU Bank: September

By: Brianna Lopez
As many may know, we now have a bank on campus. This Career Technical Education project was a joint grant venture. Clovis West had asked the State of California for a 1.5 million dollar grant which required that the District match the 1.5 million with the District funds. The construction of the bank took less than one year and is now fully operable. The Educational Employees Credit Union opened on August 30th and recently had its grand opening on September 23rd. Twenty-three students, both seniors and juniors, are currently working in the bank. The students working in the bank participated in 80 hours of EECU teller training over the summer. As this bank expands, students will be able to take courses like Accounting, Financial Literacy, Business Law. and Ethics and Advance Banking Concepts. Once students have worked at the bank,  taken their courses, and turned eighteen, they can be hired by EECU to staff the branch on holidays and over the summer. Research has shown that work-based learning helps apply and extend classroom learning. Students also gain motivation and understanding, explore careers, and develop critical understandings of the work environment. Also, students with $5.00 and a government-issued ID can open an account at the EECU branch. We highly encourage you to go and check out the bank.

Welcome To the Family, New Staff: September

By: Emma Boone, Jessica Cargin, and Giselle De Santiago
Hello Clovis West! I’m sure lately you have noticed some new faces on campus this year (and we are not talking about Freshmen). Clovis West High School has 20 new staff members this school year and it seems like the student body and staff members have given a great first impression.
Even teachers who used to work at some of our rival schools like Bullard and Clovis High have said they are looking forward to being part of our family.
While interviewing a few of the new teachers, we got excellent thoughts on how special and unique our student body is. “There are higher expectations here, better discipline, and conduct.” said Mrs. Adams, the new biology teacher.  "I think the students here are great; they're kind and respectful. They've been very accepting and welcoming," commented Mr. Kennedy.
The new staff also spoke about the current staff members with praise. "Amazing groups of people from the staff all the way to the student body. It has just been amazing," Mr. Kennedy declared later on in the interview. A new English teacher, Ms. Davis-Babb, used to work in an after school program at a middle school. She commented that “the staff here are very friendly and helpful. Since I’m new, it's nice when they are answering my questions or giving me help on lessons." Ms. Davis-Babb’s mentor, Mrs. Ferdinandsen has been teaching at Clovis West since 1991 and had nothing but kind words for the new teacher. “She is so comfortable at Clovis Westit’s like she’s been here forever. I love hanging out with her and I’m so happy she chose our school to use her talents.”
"I'm just proud to be a Clovis West Eagle," Mr. Kennedy said to conclude our interview.
If any of your teachers are new this year please welcome them to the family.
